"On Air" conversation with Dr. Dean

Below is a transcript of a conversation I had with Dr. Dean Edell during one of his radio talk shows (~1998).  During this conversation I asked him about his feelings on foreskin restoration.

Dr. Dean (D)- Mel, in XXX "A West Coast" City,

Mel (M)- Yes, Dr. Dean. I know your opinion on circumcision and my wife and I are considering having a second child. In the event that it is a boy, I was searching the net on that topic and I came across something very interesting, Foreskin restoration. (Note: this was not actually how I found the topic.. But it fit nicely into the ‘calls' for the day)

D- Ah, ha

M- I was wondering what your opinion on that was and how one might go about telling a spouse about trying to do something like that.

D- oh, you mean for yourself?

M - Yes.

D- Oh, well, I don't know if I can do this justice. I have to try and condense my thoughts here. This is a very important topic. You know that there was a time when Drs. who would do this procedure would require the patient to go through intense psychological examination. Because they thought that the patient was crazy if they wanted what amounts to plastic surgery on their penis. And yet, a women can get her breasts enlarged and people don't think that she is crazy, and these are normal breasts. And yet here is a man who has been ripped off of an essential piece of his anatomy and all of a sudden he is nuts if he wants it back. Its a pretty significant operation. There are 'do it yourself' methods, as you know.

M- Right.

D- With weights and all. You can stretch a significant amount of skin anywhere in the body if you have enough patience. Man who have done it report a great increase in sexual sensitivity in their penis, so you get back a lot of positive responses and yet... I have a hard time seeing this becoming a major movement. I think that men are just a little uptight and are not willing to admit that there is something that 'aint quite right' down there in Denmark. And yet this percolates along. There are books written. Do you have access to the books?

M- Yes.

D- Yeah, uhhmm.. There are support groups. Yeah, I would say that in there is a world of knowledge on this particular subject. Frankly there are not a lot of physicians that do the procedure. I think that if a man is really serious about this probably the way to go would be to stretch as much as he can on his own and then look into a medical touch up procedure. It seems as though, that with the ‘self stretching methods' you can't quite all the way there and Drs. find that if you pre-stretch yourself a little it makes the surgery much easier and it become a one step procedure, where as if you go full ball from beginning to end, it requires two surgeries to my knowledge. Although there are a few different procedures. It is not popular and there are only a few Drs. in the country that have experience with it.

And when you bring it up to the little lady... remember that women are part of the problem. Its women who make comments. I'm ready to slap them when I hear them say it, cause if I were to say something like that about them... boy would I be in trouble.. "Oh, its dirty", "Oh, its disgusting" (said in a girly type of voice).. Oh please, can you imagine. It is just American women who have become accustomed to it. You talk to European women who now live in America and they think that it is such a strange thing; all of the American man are one way. We're the last country doing this as you know.

And so, I would support any man who feels strongly about it. And many, many, many do. I just wish that this was a little more out in the open so that we could do studies, find out what the best methods are....

(Note: the conversation ends here... he actually comes back to the topic after a commercial break...)
